Bringing your license from another state
Nothing to bring — the state licenses nothing in the trades, and even NYC's Department of Buildings runs no fitter card: its piping instruments are the Master Plumber and Master Fire Suppression Piping licenses with journeyman REGISTRATIONS under them, plus gas-work qualifications. The NYC registration has a localism worth knowing: five years of experience including ONE YEAR IN NYC — out-of-state years alone never qualify.
And the fire-suppression side is the SPRINKLER trade, never a pipefitting credential.
Can you work while it is pending?
Nothing pending on fitter scope. NYC plumbing-scoped placements need the journeyman registration BEFORE journeyman-level work — and its NYC-year requirement makes same-week conversion impossible for a fresh traveler; plan the crew around licensed masters and registered hands.
The exam and the hours
No fitter exam exists. NYC's journeyman plumber registration runs on documented experience under licensed masters (a NYS-registered training program substitutes for four of the five years); the master licenses carry their own exams. On NYC boiler jobs, ask first — the oil-burner installer license's reach over hydronic piping is the boundary we still owe a read.
How apprenticing works here
No fitter tier. NYC plumbing hours bank under licensed masters toward the journeyman registration; upstate cities run their own plumbing-shaped regimes.
The local picture
NYC is the layer that matters and it is checked — no fitter card. Buffalo, Rochester and Yonkers license plumbing-shaped trades; nothing fitter-titled surfaced there either.
If you want to contract for yourself
NYC piping contracting anchors on the Master Plumber / Master Fire Suppression Piping licenses; upstate cities run their own schemes. Industrial process piping outside plumbing and sprinkler scope has no license to check — permits and owner qualification systems govern.
