New Mexico accepts licenses fromNo state — no reciprocity

Apply for your New Mexico license →

No reciprocity for the journeyman pipe fitter certificate — the state’s own application reciprocates ONE classification, electrical (EE98J). The famous 10-state list never applies to mechanical cards. Your two years of experience travel; the New Mexico exam does not move. Open “Bringing your license from another state” below for the full picture, and confirm with the board before you travel.

Starting as an apprentice

New Mexico has no apprentice credential — you can start with no card of your own

No apprentice certificate for the mechanical trades - hands work under certified journeymen while banking the two years the JPF requires.

The master pipefitter license

No - New Mexico has no separate master pipefitter license.

Bringing your license from another state

Nothing reciprocates — affirmatively: the state's own journeyman application reciprocates exactly one classification, electrical (EE98J), and the famous 10-state list never applies to mechanical cards. What travels is your experience: TWO YEARS of documented fitter work qualifies you to sit the JPF exam, which makes New Mexico one of the fastest licensed states in the country to test into.

Can you work while it is pending?

Not established — no temporary certificate or work-while-pending provision was recorded; do not start on silence. Unlicensed hands work as labor for the licensed contractor while the two-year clock and the PSI application run.

The exam and the hours

The JPF — JOURNEYMAN PIPE FITTER — is a real certificate named in the statute's own closed list. Two years of experience, apply through PSI on the state's journeyman application ($75), sit the exam. Two adjacent instruments worth knowing: the JW WELDER ENDORSEMENT rides an existing JPF with current ASME Section IX papers — no extra exam, no extra PSI fee — and the JMG medical-gas endorsement works the same way with an approved med-gas certification.

How apprenticing works here

No apprentice certificate exists for the mechanical trades — hands work under certified journeymen at the licensed contractor while banking the two years. The bar is low by fitter-trade standards; an experienced helper tests up faster here than almost anywhere.

The local picture

None — CID certificates run statewide; municipalities issue permits, not worker certificates.

If you want to contract for yourself

A JPF works ONLY while employed by an entity holding the right CID classification — MM-4 covers heating, cooling and process piping, MM-98 is the mechanical umbrella — so verify the EMPLOYER'S classification against the work before quoting. Two more rules: GAS IS SEPARATE (the JPF does not cover natural gas piping — that is the JG certificate), and there is no master tier — the credential above journeyman is the contractor's qualifying party, a business instrument.
