Pipefitter licensing in Louisiana

Contractors licensed, workers not

Louisiana licenses pipefitting contractors, not individual workers. Working for a licensed contractor you can usually start day one, with no card of your own and nothing to transfer in.

Bringing your license from another state

There is no Louisiana pipefitter card to bring — industrial piping is licensed at the COMPANY level ('Heavy Construction Mechanical - INDUSTRIAL PIPING' at the State Licensing Board for Contractors). The trap is the adjacent scope: Louisiana DOES license individuals in the plumbing world — journeyman and master plumber, and a separate GAS FITTER card — so a fitter tying into potable systems or running fuel gas needs those cards, and a Louisiana 'gas fitter' on a resume is a FUEL-GAS credential, never proof of pipefitting.

Can you work while it is pending?

Nothing pending for you on industrial piping — no personal license exists. Plumbing- or gas-scoped work follows the State Plumbing Board's rules.

The exam and the hours

Company-level for industrial piping (the qualifying-party exam on the LSLBC classification). Personal exams exist only in the plumbing/gas world — journeyman plumber and gas fitter through the State Plumbing Board — for work inside those scopes.

How apprenticing works here

No fitter credential at any tier. Plumbing-side apprenticeship runs through that board; industrial crews train through employers and registered apprenticeship with no licensing hook.

The local picture

Parish and municipal permitting applies — Orleans Parish in particular — and no parish fitter card is known. Call the parish office before treating the state answer as complete.

If you want to contract for yourself

The employer's LSLBC license must carry the Industrial Piping classification (with Louisiana's contract-value thresholds deciding when it bites). Verify at the board's contractor search — and note the classification maps to South Carolina's Pressure and Process Piping if the client works both states.
