Kentucky accepts licenses fromRides the HVAC card — per-partner agreements

Apply for your Kentucky license →

Hydronic work here is licensed HVAC-mechanic work, and Kentucky reciprocates that card by written agreement with terms set per partner. Get the current partner list from the HVAC division before planning. Open “Bringing your license from another state” below for the conditions, and confirm with the board before you travel.

The statute defines a department-issued apprentice certificate, assisting under BOTH a master contractor and a journeyman who is physically on site. Confirm the current paperwork with DHBC.

The master pipefitter license

No - Kentucky has no separate master pipefitter license. Hydronic fitter work rides the journeyman HVAC mechanic card; the Master HVAC Contractor above it is the contracting tier.

Bringing your license from another state

Kentucky has no pipefitter card — but the HVAC statute's practice definition expressly includes HYDRONIC SYSTEMS ('liquids to transmit or remove heat'), so hydronic piping is licensed work performed on the JOURNEYMAN HVAC MECHANIC card. That card reciprocates by written agreement with terms set per partner, and the partner list is not published — get the current list from the HVAC division before planning a transfer.

Can you work while it is pending?

The supervised lane is real: the statute defines a department-issued APPRENTICE certificate, assisting under both a master contractor and a journeyman who is PHYSICALLY ON SITE — which prices crew ratios on every Kentucky job. No work-while-pending provision exists for the journeyman license itself.

The exam and the hours

The journeyman HVAC mechanic exam is the gate ($50 initial, $50 a year, 12-month terms), run through the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. Two boundaries to settle before quoting: STEAM — the hydronic definition says 'liquids,' so confirm steam-system coverage with DHBC; and BOILERS — replacing a heating boiler system is expressly a 'major repair' no in-house maintenance crew may do, and boilers under Kentucky's boiler chapter may carry their own rules.

Industrial process piping outside comfort systems showed no card at all.

How apprenticing works here

The APPRENTICE HVAC MECHANIC certificate — department-issued, assisting under a master contractor and an on-site journeyman. Confirm the current paperwork with DHBC when you register a green hand.

The local picture

Delegated administration only — some jurisdictions run local HVAC programs under state criteria (Louisville and Lexington's old programs were absorbed by the state system in 1995). No city fitter card exists.

If you want to contract for yourself

The MASTER HVAC CONTRACTOR anchors the licensed operation — supervising and answering for all HVAC work its employees and subs perform ($250). Verify the employer at DHBC; the in-house maintenance carve-out covers routine work only and stops dead at major repairs.
