Pipefitter licensing in Kentucky

Kentucky has no pipefitter card — but the HVAC statute's practice definition expressly includes HYDRONIC SYSTEMS ('liquids to transmit or remove heat'), so hydronic piping is licensed work performed on the JOURNEYMAN HVAC MECHANIC card. That card reciprocates by written agreement with terms set per partner, and the partner list is not published — get the current list from the HVAC division before planning a transfer.

The supervised lane is real: the statute defines a department-issued APPRENTICE certificate, assisting under both a master contractor and a journeyman who is PHYSICALLY ON SITE — which prices crew ratios on every Kentucky job. No work-while-pending provision exists for the journeyman license itself.

The journeyman HVAC mechanic exam is the gate ($50 initial, $50 a year, 12-month terms), run through the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. Two boundaries to settle before quoting: STEAM — the hydronic definition says 'liquids,' so confirm steam-system coverage with DHBC; and BOILERS — replacing a heating boiler system is expressly a 'major repair' no in-house maintenance crew may do, and boilers under Kentucky's boiler chapter may carry their own rules.
