HVAC licensing in Wyoming

Licensed locally, not statewide

Wyoming has no statewide license for this trade. The city or county decides — check the jurisdiction the job is actually in before you travel.

Bringing your license from another state

Wyoming has no state HVAC license — the whole Professions and Occupations title contains no mechanical chapter, and electrical is the only building trade the state licenses — but DO NOT read that as an all-clear: the cities license individuals, in tiers. CASPER runs the mapped regime, and it honors other WYOMING jurisdictions: a reciprocal license issues on an equivalent license from another Wyoming jurisdiction, mechanical expressly included.

The limit is absolute — Wyoming jurisdictions only; an out-of-state card buys nothing anywhere in the state.

Can you work while it is pending?

Nothing pending at state level. Whether Casper allows work while the Chief Building Official reviews an application was not established — and the reciprocal license is a qualifying route for Wyoming-carded workers, not a temporary permission.

The exam and the hours

Set by the city, and Casper publishes its route: Mechanical Journeyman takes a federally recognized apprenticeship certificate OR four years in a City of Casper licensed mechanical shop, plus ICC G31-N (or G29-N); Mechanical Master adds five years as journeyman or master and takes ICC G29-N. Applications go to Community Development with notarized experience affidavits. Your personal floor is EPA 608.

How apprenticing works here

Casper issues a real MECHANICAL APPRENTICE license — an individual card authorizing supervised heating, venting, air conditioning, refrigeration and sheet metal work, with no exam or experience requirement stated. Federally recognized apprenticeship completion is one of the two routes to the journeyman tier.

The local picture

Casper is mapped at the city's own pages (Contractor / Master / Journeyman / Apprentice, all individual). ⚠️ CHEYENNE could not be read — its site refuses all access, ours and yours alike — and credible but unconfirmed reporting describes a full master/journeyman/apprentice HVAC regime there. Call Cheyenne's building department before any placement there; do not rely on anything published about it.

Laramie, Gillette, Rock Springs, Sheridan and Jackson are unmapped.

If you want to contract for yourself

Casper licenses the business (Mechanical Contractor) alongside the individual tiers and requires the individual credential behind it. The scope line matters here too: electrical is state-licensed in Wyoming through the Fire Marshal's office, individuals included — a dual-trade tech crossing into wiring steps into the state regime.
