Reciprocity exists on paper but no written mechanical agreement with any state surfaced, in either direction — the rule (OAC 158:50-9-6) only operates where a written agreement exists. Plan on the Oklahoma exam. Open “Bringing your license from another state” below for the full picture, and confirm with the board before you travel.

Bringing your license from another state

Oklahoma runs a true worker ladder — the MECHANICAL JOURNEYMAN license, in HVAC/R Limited (cooling to 25 tons, heating to 500,000 Btu/h per appliance) and Unlimited categories — and the transfer picture is honest but thin: the reciprocity rule (OAC 158:50-9-6) sets five conditions including mutual recognition and an exam-earned original license, but it only operates where a WRITTEN agreement exists with your state, and no written mechanical agreement surfaced in either direction.

The good news is in the exam section: your out-of-state experience counts toward qualifying Oklahoma's own way.

Can you work while it is pending?

Not established in the rule — no temporary-license or work-pending-exam provision exists in the reciprocity rule, and fees are non-refundable under any circumstances. Claims of a cheap temporary journeyman lane circulate online and appear NOWHERE in the rule — do not rely on them; ask the CIB directly and get it in writing.

The exam and the hours

Qualification routes, read live from the CIB's own page: 18 years old plus one of — 3 years verifiable experience; or 1 year plus an associate's/vocational diploma of 1,000+ hours; or 2 years plus a 500-hour vocational diploma. OUT-OF-STATE EXPERIENCE COUNTS toward these — lawfully obtained experience needs no Oklahoma registration.

The exam runs through a third-party vendor after application approval. Your personal floor is EPA 608.

How apprenticing works here

Register with the CIB BEFORE Oklahoma hours start — unregistered in-state hours do not count toward the exam. Out-of-state hours are exempt from that trap; they count as lawfully-obtained experience without any Oklahoma registration.

If you want to contract for yourself

The mechanical contractor license sits above the journeyman on the same CIB ladder. A traveling tech needs the journeyman card at the right category — Limited covers most service work; Unlimited exists for large-tonnage scope. Match the category to the equipment.
