No HVAC reciprocity — the board’s own FAQ says the only journeyman classification reciprocated is EE-98J, electrical. The famous 10-state list does not apply to mechanical cards; plan on the New Mexico exam. Open “Bringing your license from another state” below for the full picture, and confirm with the board before you travel.
Starting as an apprentice
New Mexico has no apprentice credential — you can start with no card of your own
No separate apprentice certificate for the mechanical trades - apprentices work under certified journeymen within CID supervision ratios.
Bringing your license from another state
New Mexico licenses the individual mechanical worker — journeyman certificates of competence mapped to contractor classifications (MM-3 is the HVAC class) — and the board answers the transfer question itself, flatly: 'The only journeyman classification reciprocated in New Mexico is EE-98J' — electrical. The famous 10-state list is electrical-only, officially.
A traveling HVAC journeyman does NOT transfer a card into New Mexico; you sit the New Mexico exam for the JR (or related) certificate. Plan the exam, not the paperwork.
Can you work while it is pending?
Not established — no pending-application provision was found. The entry lane while preparing for the journeyman exam is supervised apprentice work within the CID's ratio rules.
The exam and the hours
Journeyman certificates issue by examination per class — and New Mexico is the one state in the packet that makes EPA refrigerant-recovery compliance a PRECONDITION of the certificate itself (the JR certificate requires 608-class compliance before issuance, by rule). Contractor classifications take four years' experience. Your personal floor is EPA 608 — here it is literally part of the license.
How apprenticing works here
No separate apprentice certificate for the mechanical trades — apprentices work under certified journeymen within the CID's supervision ratios, and the journeyman certificate is the first card.
The local picture
The state CID system governs statewide.
If you want to contract for yourself
Contractor classifications (MM-1 plumbing, MM-2 gas fitting, MM-3 HVAC and related) carry the business; the journeyman certificate carries the worker. Match the class to the scope — the MM classes are separately drawn.
