HVAC licensing in New Jersey

Contractors licensed, workers not

New Jersey licenses HVAC contractors, not individual workers. Working for a licensed contractor you can usually start day one, with no card of your own and nothing to transfer in.

Bringing your license from another state

New Jersey licenses ONE tier — the MASTER HVACR CONTRACTOR — and the restriction binds exactly that: 'a person shall not work as a master HVACR contractor... unless licensed' (N.J.S.A. 45:16A-7). The ladder below master is unlicensed by design, so a traveling journeyman brings nothing and needs nothing. If you want the MASTER license itself, reciprocity (N.J.A.C.

13:32A-2.5) demands BOTH halves: the other state's standards must be comparable AND that state must reciprocate for New Jersey licensees — and the applicant submits the proof. Few states clear both; plan on the qualification routes instead.

Can you work while it is pending?

Nothing pending for the employed worker — no license exists below master. For a master application, no interim-practice provision was established.

The exam and the hours

Master-level, four routes, all ending in the Board-approved exam: a 4-year USDOL apprenticeship plus a year of journeyperson experience under a licensed master; an HVACR bachelor's plus one year; a related bachelor's plus three; or a 2-year trade degree plus two apprenticeship years plus one journeyperson year. Application $100, renewal $160, 5 CE credits per cycle. Your personal floor is EPA 608.

How apprenticing works here

No state apprentice license — New Jersey accepts only U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR registered apprenticeships, employer-sponsored and NOT transferable between employers: change companies and the new employer must re-register you. Journeyperson years are an unlicensed role banking experience toward master.

The local picture

Preempted by statute — N.J.S.A. 45:16A-6 bars municipalities and local boards from issuing or renewing master HVACR licenses. One state answer; local permits still apply.

If you want to contract for yourself

One-tier structure: the business registers a BONA FIDE REPRESENTATIVE — a licensed master meeting ownership-or-officer thresholds — and the license number rides vehicles, correspondence and advertising by rule. Everyone below works under the master. Work 'as a master HVACR contractor' without the license — including contracting directly — and 45:16A-7 is the wall you hit.
