New Hampshire accepts licenses fromConditional — only states that reciprocate back

Both New Hampshire lanes require mutuality: your home state must grant NH licensees the same privilege. Pure AC/refrigeration work needs no NH license. Open “Bringing your license from another state” below for the conditions, and confirm with the board before you travel.

Defined as anyone in the process of meeting the licensing requirements, under licensed-fitter supervision.
Bringing your license from another state
New Hampshire licenses by fuel and equipment type, not 'HVAC' — and the coverage question is settled both ways it can be: pure air-conditioning and refrigeration work requires NO New Hampshire state license. The licensed territory is FUEL GAS work. Two doors exist for licensed gas fitters from elsewhere, both conditional:
RSA 153 mutual reciprocity agreements with states that reciprocate for New Hampshire, and an endorsement rule that issues a license on out-of-state evidence — PROVIDED the home state grants New Hampshire licensees the same privilege. Both hinge on mutuality; next door, nothing here is unilateral.
Can you work while it is pending?
Partially established, tier-scoped: the FUEL GAS FITTING TRAINEE license is the lawful work-while-qualifying lane — defined as anyone 'engaged in the process of meeting the licensing requirements' under licensed-fitter supervision. No provision covers unlicensed work while a full FITTER application is pending. On the cooling side nothing is ever pending, because nothing is licensed.
The exam and the hours
Gas-fitter exams book through Advanced Trade School, (603) 785-2491. One burden worth knowing before applying: applicants with a felony, an offense against another person, or any dishonesty offense must submit a current NH criminal records check with the application. Your personal floor is EPA 608.
How apprenticing works here
The Fuel Gas Fitting Trainee is a real licensed entry tier (a domestic-appliance trainee tier also exists) — supervised piping, heating, hot-water and hearth work while qualifying. Fees and terms were not captured; ask OPLC when budgeting.
The local picture
The state scheme governs the licensed territory statewide.
If you want to contract for yourself
Know the fuel line: gas work runs through OPLC's Mechanical Safety & Licensing tiers; straight cooling work is unlicensed territory where EPA 608 is the whole personal picture.
