NO - MICHIGAN RECIPROCATES WITH NOBODY, THIS IS A REAL PER-WORKER GATE. The board says it verbatim: "Michigan does not hold reciprocity with any other state/country" (LARA BCC electrical licensing page, re-confirmed 2026-07-21), and MCL 339.5737(2) makes it illegal for an individual to execute electrical wiring without an Article 7 license/registration - so the candidate PERSONALLY needs a Michigan credential before touching wiring, no matter what card they carry.

THE PATH IN IS EQUIVALENCY, NOT RE-APPRENTICESHIP - THE HOURS TRANSFER: submit the out-of-state license plus that jurisdiction's licensing requirements showing detailed hours/schooling (board page); the board may accept equivalent experience for exam eligibility (MCL 339.5709(a)); the candidate then sits Michigan's PSI journeyman exam ($100, 75% to pass, 2023 NEC basis).

The exam is the gate - nobody redoes the 8,000 hours. THE RECRUITER'S THREE QUESTIONS: (1) HOW LONG UNTIL THEY CAN WORK? Board's own numbers, not vendor estimates: BCC application processing is "up to 3-5 weeks" in order of receipt (BCC Licensing Section page, captured 2026-07-21); once approved to test, PSI contacts the candidate within 10 business days and the candidate self-schedules at a Michigan computer test center on a date of their choosing; the license issues after passing ($40 journeyman / $50 master initial fee).

A pending application will not appear as a license - confirm application status directly with the Licensing Section (517-241-9316, lara-bcc-licensing@michigan.gov). TWO TRAPS: (a) CITY OF DETROIT issues its own electrician licenses and registrations locally (board-stated), and Detroit's own licenses require DETROIT RESIDENCY (BSEED master checklist, verified 2026-07-21) - so a traveler does not pursue a Detroit license; they come in on the state LARA license, which MCL 339.5733(3) requires all municipalities, Detroit included, to recognize.

Permits and inspections inside Detroit still run through Detroit BSEED, and a Detroit-licensed electrician working outside Detroit must register/transfer the local license with BCC (form BCC-800). (b) Even a Michigan-licensed journeyman must be employed by and work under the direction of a licensed Michigan ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR (MCL 339.5737(2)) - a solo 1099 traveler with no contractor behind them is illegal even with the right card, so verify the employer's contractor license in the same lookup.

NONE. There is no partner list and no per-partner mechanics because no reciprocal agreements exist. The only general out-of-state route is equivalency review, not reciprocity: an out-of-state applicant "to be considered for licensure" must submit a copy of the out-of-state/country license PLUS a copy of that jurisdiction's licensing requirements showing detailed hours/schooling; the board may accept equivalent experience for exam eligibility under MCL 339.5709(a) (text re-verified 2026-07-21) - you still take Michigan's PSI exam.

PARTIALLY ESTABLISHED - THE STATUTE SAYS YES, THE BOARD'S PRACTICE IS UNCONFIRMED. Hard rule first: an individual who is not licensed/registered under STRA Article 7 may not "in any manner undertake to execute any electrical wiring" (MCL 339.5737(2), text verified 2026-07-21), so the restrictive default is NO WORK until a Michigan credential is in hand.

WHAT EXISTS IN STATUTE: MCL 339.5219(1) (text verified 2026-07-21) authorizes a nonrenewable TEMPORARY LICENSE for an applicant who holds a current out-of-state license in good standing in the occupation and has never had a license denied, revoked, or suspended. It is discretionary ("the department MAY grant"), requires board approval, runs only until exam results are out / a license issues / the next exam date passes unsat, is VOID on a change of employment, and is capped at 2 per 4-year period.

THE OPERATIONAL LAYER IS MISSING: the BCC Licensing forms page publishes NO general temporary-license application for the electrical trades (the only temporary form there is the "Request for Temporary Military Spouse License Application"), and the state's Accela lookup lists no "Electrical Temporary" license type - whether BCC actually issues civilian 339.5219(1) temporaries to electrical applicants is NOT ESTABLISHED.

Do NOT place on the strength of the statute alone: have the employer obtain written confirmation from the BCC Licensing Section (517-241-9316, lara-bcc-licensing@michigan.gov) that a temporary license will issue, or wait for the real license. THE MILITARY LANE IS ESTABLISHED AND FAST: dependents of members/veterans holding an equivalent out-of-state license get a SHALL-ISSUE 6-month temporary license, renewable once (MCL 339.5219(3)-(4), published BCC form), and members, veterans, and dependents can skip the Michigan exam entirely via MCL 339.5223 + the BCC Military Examination Waiver Procedure (bureau procedure dated 9-15-2021).

NOT A WORKAROUND: apprentice registration - it requires proof of participation in a board-approved apprenticeship training program (MCL 339.5717(2)), not mere supervision, so a traveling journeyman cannot simply register down to apprentice to work while waiting.

YES - A STATE WORKER LICENSE IS REQUIRED. This state licenses the individual electrician, so the tradesperson personally needs the credential before working. Scope is state, but with one board-confirmed municipal carve-out: the CITY OF DETROIT — "If you live in the City of Detroit, they issue their own licenses and registrations locally" (LARA board page). The statutory basis is MCL 339.5733: any municipality with examination/licensing standards "at least as stringent" as the state's may license locally, and state licenses and qualifying municipal licenses "shall be recognized by all municipalities" — so a state LARA license is recognized statewide (https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=mcl-339-5733).

DETROIT SPECIFICS VERIFIED 2026-07-21 direct from the BSEED master electrician checklist page (detroitmi.gov): master exam $63, master license $55, applicant must be 22+, a DETROIT RESIDENT with proof of residency, and have held a journeyman license 2+ years; failing the exam twice within 2 years = 1-year wait plus a board-approved course.

The residency requirement means Detroit's local licensing lane is effectively closed to non-resident travelers - they come in on the state LARA license, which MCL 339.5733(3) requires all municipalities to recognize.

Michigan is the OPPOSITE of the Ohio pattern, and conflating the two licenses here cuts both ways. The Electrical Contractor license is a BUSINESS credential: it is "required if you want to do business as an electrician" (LARA board page), i.e., to engage in the business of electrical contracting — bidding, pulling permits, contracting directly with customers (MCL 339.5737(1)).

It has no exam ("There is no test required to be an Electrical Contractor, but you still have to apply" — LARA), costs $300 per 3-year cycle (MCL 339.5707), and requires either personally holding a master electrician license or employing a full-time Michigan-resident master who is "actively in charge of and responsible for" code compliance (MCL 339.5711).

A master may qualify only ONE contractor at a time; without an associated master the contractor license goes on hold (board page). BUT — where a worker needs no license to be hired — a Michigan WORKER DOES need an individual state credential to legally perform electrical work: MCL 339.5737(2) provides that an individual, other than one licensed/registered under Article 7 and employed by and working under the direction of a licensed electrical contractor, shall not undertake to execute electrical wiring (statutory exemptions in 339.5737(3) cover things like utility work and certain minor/own-premises work).

So to be HIRED and work on a crew in Michigan you must at minimum hold an active apprentice registration ($15/yr, requires RTI enrollment) or a journeyman/master license — and you must be working under a licensed electrical contractor.
