Electrician licensing in Kentucky

YES - IF AND ONLY IF it is an active WEST VIRGINIA or VIRGINIA Journeyman or Master electrician license. Those are the only worker-level partners on the board's own checklist (re-read 2026-07-21): submit a copy of the active WV/VA license, the completed Electrical License application, the application fee, a passport-style color photo, and a letter of good standing - NO Kentucky exam.

The third listed partner, OHIO, is CONTRACTOR-level only (an active Ohio electrical contractor is issued both a KY Contractor Electrician and a Master Electrician license); it does a placed journeyman no good because Ohio issues no journeyman license to reciprocate. YES, WITH A STATUTORY SUPERVISION LANE - Kentucky is unusually workable while a license or endorsement application is pending, but ONLY inside the lanes the statute actually draws. (1) SUPERVISED WORK IS ALWAYS LEGAL: KRS 227A.020(4) (read verbatim 2026-07-21) permits an unlicensed person to perform electrician duties "under the direct supervision of a licensed electrician or master electrician who is present on the site where the work is being performed" - no registration, no fee, no time cap.

A traveler awaiting a WV/VA endorsement or an exam date can be placed on a crew TODAY under a KY-licensed lead. (2) UNSUPERVISED NONRESIDENT LANE - SHUTDOWN/EMERGENCY WORK: KRS 227A.030(6) expressly permits "unlicensed, nonresident electricians in temporary, emergency, or industrial shutdown situations" to work unsupervised, with a clock: they must APPLY for the KY electrician/master license after 10 days of KY work, may not work more than 30 days in any calendar year without applying, and must OBTAIN the license within 60 days of securing employment.

This is the most placement-relevant sentence in the chapter for traveling shutdown crews. (3) DISASTER RESPONSE: a disaster response employee (KRS 141.010 definition) licensed as an electrician/master in another state is exempt from the chapter entirely (KRS 227A.030(12); disaster response businesses at (13)). There is no residential-wireman class and no apprentice license. Electrician requires 8,000 hours of verifiable experience since the 16th birthday (one substitution worth 4,000 hours allowed: approved training course; or 2 years of a minimum 4-year training course with mandatory completion within 4 years of licensure or the license is revoked; or an associate's degree/diploma in electrical technology; or 2 years teaching electrical technology) plus a passing exam score.

Master requires 16,000 hours (training course or 2 years teaching substitutes 4,000; associate's degree substitutes 6,000) plus the master exam. n/a — KRS 227A.020(6) expressly supersedes "all ordinances or regulations regulating electricians, master electricians, and electrical contractors of any city, county, urban-county, charter county, or consolidated local government"; local governments may at most contract with the department to act as its issuing/renewal agents (KRS 227A.020(5)). One statewide regime; no local patchwork.

Kentucky is the mirror image of Ohio: it DOES license the individual worker, and the Electrical Contractor license is a separate BUSINESS credential. The contractor license (KRS 227A.060(1), https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=55092) is what you need to contract with the public under your own name — it requires a Business & Law exam, proof of workers' comp/unemployment-insurance compliance, and a $1,000,000 general liability policy ($400 per 2-year period), and per the board's checklist "In order to apply for your electrical contractor's license, you will need a Kentucky master electrician license or employ a Kentucky licensed master electrician."
