Cómo traer tu licencia de otro estado
Texas reciprocates with exactly two states, and the conditions are heavy. Louisiana: you must have held both the journeyman plumbing license and the journeyman natural gas fitter license for two years, with 8,000 supervised hours behind them — a Louisiana journeyman without the gas card does not qualify. Arkansas: the journeyman license held four years, or you sit the Texas practical instead.
Both routes skip the Texas exam, cost $40, and wait on your IdentoGO fingerprints — nothing approves until those are on file. From any other state there is no wall, just an exam: a journeyman or master license held two years qualifies you to sit, the 48 hours of Texas classroom training is waived for current out-of-state licensees, and your out-of-state journeyman years count toward the Texas master.
Military spouses do better still: on a substantial-equivalence finding, up to three years of Texas plumbing work with no Texas license at all.
¿Puedes trabajar mientras está en trámite?
No general permit exists, and the statute binds the worker and the employer both. The practical lane is the apprentice registration: sixteen or older, $15, fingerprints, no experience requirement — then you assist under direct supervision on a responsible master plumber's contracts, and every registered hour counts toward your Texas license (unregistered hours never do).
File online; mailed applications can take 45 business days. The disaster lane is real but stood up per event — when the governor declares one, out-of-state plumbers can work the recovery on a 30-day temporary license, filed within ten days of starting.
El examen y el horario
Exams run through Pearson VUE, and the journeyman exam includes a practical. The ladder: Tradesman Plumber-Limited at 24 training hours plus 4,000 supervised hours; Journeyman at 48 classroom hours plus 8,000 — with the training waived if you hold a current out-of-state journeyman or master license, and up to 1,000 hours credited for a registered apprenticeship program.
Cómo funciona el programa de aprendizaje aquí
Registration is a single eligibility line — at least sixteen — plus $15, photo ID, work authorization, and fingerprints. It renews annually on a date printed on your pocket card, with an email reminder about 65 days out. The scope is assisting under a licensee's direct supervision on RMP-secured contracts; add-on registrations cover yard water service and building sewers on houses, and drain cleaning.
La situación local
Your Texas license is valid statewide by statute, and no city issues a worker card on top of it. Cities over 5,000 regulate plumbing and require permits, but the municipal registration duty belongs to the plumbing contractor — free by law — and the responsible master pulls the permit. None of it touches your wallet.
Si quieres trabajar por cuenta propia
Texas's business credential is the Responsible Master Plumber — a person, not a company license: one master who lends the license to one company, pulls its permits, carries its responsibility, and keeps $300,000 of liability insurance on file. It sits on top of the worker requirement, never instead of it — an employer's RMP does not cover you, and a wage-earning traveler never needs one.
