Plumber licensing in Illinois

Illinois publishes no partner list, and the one named no-exam route is city-to-state: a City of Chicago plumber's license converts to the state license for $150 with proof from the licensing agency of a four-year licensed apprenticeship — employer letters are not accepted. Everything else runs through a case-by-case equivalency test with a mutuality condition — your state must reciprocate back to Illinois — and no state currently clears it, so treat Illinois as an exam state.

Do not try to launder through Chicago either: the city's own no-exam route carries the identical mutuality test. What your out-of-state time does buy: licensed time elsewhere credits hour-for-hour toward the four-year exam eligibility.

No — no temporary, provisional, or emergency permit exists, and the exposure is double-sided: up to $5,000 per violation for the worker and up to $10,000 plus registration suspension for the contractor that allows it. The one lawful pre-exam status is the Illinois apprentice plumber's license — a real license, employer-gated: your sponsoring Illinois licensed plumber completes and signs their section, supervision caps at two apprentices per plumber, and it goes by mail with a paper check.

The good-news cases: anyone already holding the IDPH license or a City of Chicago license works statewide immediately — either card is valid everywhere in Illinois.

The state exam takes four years employed as an Illinois licensed apprentice — with licensed out-of-state time crediting hour-for-hour — or completion of an approved plumbing program, plus a high-school diploma or equivalent. You apply directly to the department, on paper with a photograph, at least 30 days before the exam date; there is no third-party vendor for the state license.

The apprentice license is mandatory before apprentice work, and it cannot be completed alone: page two belongs to your sponsoring Illinois licensed plumber, who lists every plumber and apprentice the company employs, plus the employer's plumbing contractor registration number. Paper and mail only — the online portals are for renewals.

One local regime exists, and the statute sizes it rather than naming it: municipalities over 500,000 may run their own licensing — that is Chicago, and only Chicago. Everywhere else is the state license. For a worker the two cards are interchangeable: a state license works in Chicago and a Chicago license works statewide.

The plumbing contractor registration is the business's credential — insurance, financial security, annual renewal — and the split is printed into the forms: the employer carries the 055 contractor registration, the worker carries the plumber or apprentice license. Illinois is not a contractor-only state; the person doing the work is licensed personally.
