No reciprocity with any state, at either level — the board answers the question directly. Your out-of-state years count as experience credit; the Georgia exam is never waived. Georgia has no apprentice credential — you can start with no card of your own

The board issues exactly three plumbing credentials and none of them is an apprentice card - no application, no fee, no roster. Helper time is documented retroactively on the journeyman application and attested by your three licensed references. ⚠️ The statute wrote no apprentice exemption for plumbing, so unlicensed helper time with a contractor sits in a gray area - at one year of required experience, the journeyman license is the safer answer.

Cómo traer tu licencia de otro estado

Georgia has no reciprocity with any state, at either level — the board answers the question directly, and the answer is no. The rulebook does contain a reciprocity mechanism that names both plumbing licenses, but the Division has never recognized a state under it. What your out-of-state time does buy is experience credit, and Georgia's experience bar is lower than most guides claim — one year for journeyman (not three), five for master with at least two as a licensed journeyman.

For a seasoned traveler the resume is the easy part; the Georgia exam is the real gate, and it is never waived.

¿Puedes trabajar mientras está en trámite?

No — and the board says so in plain words: "You may not legally perform services until you hold an active license." There is no temporary permit, no provisional license, and no supervised-work path around it — in Georgia, installing plumbing under a master's direction is the definition of a licensed journeyman, not an exemption for the unlicensed.

The wage-employee carve-out that conditioned-air and electrical workers have was not written for plumbing. Military spouses and transitioning service members get expedited processing of the paperwork, not permission to start early. A press release about a 2026 law mentioned temporary licenses; nothing has appeared in the application system since, so plan around the license.

El examen y el horario

The journeyman path is one year of plumbing experience — primary or secondary, so supervised installs, county water-department maintenance, and full-time plumbing inspection all count — plus three licensed-plumber references, then the exam. The master path is five years with at least two as a licensed journeyman: Class I covers houses, two-family dwellings, and commercial under 10,000 square feet; Class II is unrestricted and asks for documented commercial or industrial experience.

Paper applications are returned unopened — everything goes through the GOALS portal. Georgia publishes its fees behind a portal we could not verify, so confirm the current exam fee when you apply.

Cómo funciona el programa de aprendizaje aquí

Georgia has no apprentice card, no trainee registration, and no helper roster — the board issues exactly three credentials, and none of them is an apprentice license. Helper years are documented after the fact on the journeyman application and attested by your references. A formally registered apprenticeship runs through a U.S.

DOL sponsor, not the licensing board. One caution: the statute wrote no apprentice exemption for plumbing, so unlicensed helper time with a plumbing contractor sits in a gray area — and at one year of required experience, the journeyman license is close enough to make it the safer answer.

La situación local

A Georgia license is good statewide, and the statute says no city or county may layer a second license or examination on top of it. What local governments still run: their own codes, permits, and inspections; a possible $10,000 code-compliance bond that lands on the master or the business, not on you; and — the one that can reach a worker — a local inspection authority may suspend your license within its own jurisdiction, appealable to the board.

Si quieres trabajar por cuenta propia

Georgia folds the contractor question into the master license: the board does not register plumbing companies at all, and only a master plumber may run a plumbing business — the firm operates under its qualifying master's license. For a W-2 job that changes nothing for you except the floor: plumbing has no wage-employee carve-out, so every installer needs their own journeyman or master license.

The business side is the master's concern.
