HVAC licensing in Illinois

Illinois has no state HVAC license — IDFPR's own list of roughly 180 licensed professions includes roofing contractors and no HVAC credential of any kind, so the state licenses construction trades when it chooses to and has not chosen this one. Nothing transfers at state level; the jurisdiction where the job sits sets the terms, and Illinois has hundreds of home-rule jurisdictions.

Nothing pending at state level. Municipal application timing is the municipality's rule.

No state exam. Municipal where one exists — and in Chicago the gate is not an HVAC trade exam at all (see local). Your personal floor is EPA 608.

No state apprentice card. Local rules govern where they exist; registered apprenticeship runs through USDOL sponsors.

Only Chicago is mapped, and its shape surprises people: no dedicated HVAC trade license — a general contractor license covers most construction work, with Municipal Code chapter 18-28 setting the mechanical technical requirements under the Department of Buildings. Cook County outside the city, Aurora, Naperville, Rockford, Joliet, Springfield and Peoria are unmapped.

A representative sample is the realistic goal in a state with hundreds of home-rule jurisdictions — always confirm the destination.
