No reciprocity — Connecticut holds no reciprocal agreement with any jurisdiction, and the department says it in those words. The equivalency review earns exam eligibility, never a license. Cómo traer tu licencia de otro estado

Connecticut has no reciprocal agreement with any jurisdiction — the department says it in those words. What exists is an equivalency review, and its outcome is eligibility to sit the Connecticut exam, not a license: your out-of-state license must have required the same classroom hours, curriculum, and on-the-job training as the license you want (for the unlimited P-2, that benchmark is 8,000 hours plus 576 classroom).

Send a copy of the license, a verification, the rules you qualified under, and the scope of work — and pick your strongest license, because the department reviews exactly one, and the fee is non-refundable either way. A second statutory route waives nothing an out-of-stater cares about: it is residency-gated and the exam survives it.

¿Puedes trabajar mientras está en trámite?

No — and it is a statutory bar, not a silence: the law says a person must have first obtained the license, and there is no temporary permit, provisional license, or courtesy period for out-of-state cards. Three lawful positions exist. The CTDOL apprentice registration card satisfies the statute — but it is employer-initiated, at apprentice scope and pay.

The in-plant exemption covers a factory's own maintenance employees on its own premises — direct-hire maintenance placements have nothing to wait for, contractor payroll does not qualify. And work outside the statutory definition of plumbing needs no license, which is a scope question, not a workaround.

El examen y el horario

Hours are set per license code: the unlimited P-2 takes 8,000 on-the-job hours plus 576 classroom; the limited J-2 takes 4,000 plus 288; smaller scopes less. The classroom hours must match the department's own subject list — continuing-education and manufacturer certificates are expressly not accepted. The order of operations: apply to the department first through the eLicense portal; approval puts you on the eligibility list for the exam vendor — you cannot book the test directly.

Cómo funciona el programa de aprendizaje aquí

Employer-initiated, full stop — the labor department's line is that all apprenticeships start with a job. You get hired by an approved sponsor, the employer registers you through the e-Apprenticeship portal, and the Office of Apprenticeship Training confirms it to you. No worker-side registration fee is published.

La situación local

Licensing is entirely statewide through the Department of Consumer Protection — no Connecticut municipality issues a trade license. Local building departments issue permits and inspect; they do not license you.

Si quieres trabajar por cuenta propia

Connecticut licenses both sides. The P-1 unlimited plumbing contractor license is the contracting credential — bidding, holding out, pulling permits — and it takes two years as a licensed unlimited journeyperson to qualify, with limited contractor codes for narrower scopes on the same two-year pattern. An employee on a licensed contractor's payroll needs the journeyperson license, not the contractor one.
