## Licensing — read this before you accept
Iowa licenses electricians statewide, and **Iowa has no temporary or provisional journeyman permit.** Until your Iowa Journeyman Class A card actually issues, working unsupervised at journeyman level is not legal in Iowa. The legal way to be on site while your application is processing is Iowa's **Unclassified Person license ($20/year)**, working under supervision.
Plan your start date around that. Do not assume your out-of-state card lets you start solo on day one.
### Iowa accepts a reciprocal journeyman license from these 13 states
Alaska · Arkansas · Colorado · Minnesota · Montana · Nebraska · Nuevo Hampshire · Dakota del Norte · Oklahoma · Dakota del Sur · Texas · Wisconsin · Wyoming
### What reciprocity actually requires
It is a paper application with no Iowa exam, but it is not automatic. Under Iowa Code 103.21 and Iowa Administrative Code 481-401.2(14)-(15), you must:
- Have **passed your own state's state-sponsored exam at 70% or better**
- Have **held that license continuously for at least one year**, never expired, suspended or revoked
- Have **never taken and failed the Iowa exam**
- Show **either completion of an approved apprenticeship OR 16,000 hours of licensed electrical work**, by sworn affidavit
- Register with the State of Iowa and pay the Iowa license fee
**Note the "either/or" on hours** — if you completed a registered apprenticeship, you do not need to document 16,000 hours separately.
