HVAC licensing in South Carolina

There is no South Carolina worker card to bring — both SC boards license the CONTRACTING party. Know the two-surface structure before reading any partner list: COMMERCIAL mechanical contracting over $10,000 runs through the Contractor's Licensing Board (CLB); RESIDENTIAL HVAC over just $500 runs through the Residential Builders Commission (RBC).

Each runs its own reciprocity. The CLB's Technical Exam Waiver list (revised 5/2026, read in full) accepts Alabama Heating & Air and Refrigeration, Georgia Unrestricted Conditioned Air (exam passed after mid-1980), Louisiana Statewide Mechanical, North Carolina heating groups, Ohio HVAC (into Packaged Equipment), Tennessee CMC and CMC-C, and Texas Class A/B — every one a waiver of the TRADE exam only, because the SC Business, Law and Project Management exam is never waived.

The RBC side runs the separate mutual agreement with Alabama.

¿Puedes trabajar mientras está en trámite?

Nothing pending for an employed worker on either surface — employees hold nothing here. A contractor awaiting a CLB or RBC license has no established interim provision.

El examen y el horario

Contractor-level on both surfaces: the CLB qualifying party takes the trade exam for the subclassification plus the Business, Law and Project Management exam; the RBC residential specialty runs computer-based through PSI, then a license fee and surety bond. Your personal floor is EPA 608.

Cómo funciona el programa de aprendizaje aquí

No apprentice card on either surface. Commercially, 40-11-270(E) even permits supervised unlicensed subs — the structure simply never licenses the individual. EPA 608 is your credential.

La situación local

Not applicable at state level — the two boards divide the field by market segment (residential vs commercial), not by municipality.

Si quieres trabajar por cuenta propia

⚠️ The sharpest 1099 trap in this dataset: the RESIDENTIAL threshold is $500. A tech who contracts residential HVAC work directly — with an owner, builder or GC — above five hundred dollars personally needs the exam-gated RBC specialty license, bond and all. Commercial direct work trips the CLB license at $10,000.

On a W-2, neither touches you; the moment you invoice, one of them almost certainly does. And a candidate's claim of an 'SC license' means nothing until you know WHICH board issued it.
