Comenzando como aprendiz
En Virginia no existe una credencial de aprendiz; puedes empezar sin tener tu propia tarjeta
- ¿Quién lo expide?
- Dept of Workforce Development and Advancement (DWDA) approves the programs
DPOR issues no apprentice card - apprentices work legally under the statutory supervision allowance while registered in an approved program. Completing one exempts you from the journeyman exam outright, and an out-of-state apprenticeship counts with proof its sponsor was registered there.
Cómo traer tu licencia de otro estado
Virginia's answer is universal license recognition, and it is the real door: an exam-earned journeyman or master license from any state, held at least one year and clean, converts to the Virginia license without retesting — $171.75, on the dedicated ULR application. The paperwork condition to start early: certification-of-licensure letters, dated within 90 days, sent directly from every jurisdiction where you hold or ever held a license, expired ones included.
Worked three years in a state that does not license plumbers? ULR still applies, with the Virginia exam added. Ignore the reciprocity list you may have heard about — Virginia's famous agreements are electrical, and the only plumbing entry is a Maryland utility authority's exam agreement. One quiet condition: a non-resident applicant consents to Virginia service of process as part of applying.
¿Puedes trabajar mientras está en trámite?
Yes — and it comes from the statute, not a permit: you are not subject to licensure while working under the supervision of a tradesman licensed in the specialty. A traveler can start supervised on day one while the ULR or exam application runs. Read it conservatively — supervision is not defined, so treat it as a Virginia-licensed plumber actually running the crew, confirmed in writing with the employer's master, and no unsupervised work until the license issues.
Military spouses get the only clock in the record: if the board cannot finish its review within 20 days, a temporary license issues for up to twelve months.
El examen y el horario
Board approval first, then a PSI exam. The journeyman ladder trades training for years: four years plus 240 classroom hours, down through eight years with no formal training — or a related degree plus experience, or your out-of-state license itself, which qualifies you to sit. A completed registered apprenticeship skips the journeyman exam entirely.
Master takes one year as a licensed journeyman, or three as a Virginia residential tradesman.
Cómo funciona el programa de aprendizaje aquí
Virginia issues no separate apprentice card — apprentices work legally under the statutory supervision allowance while registered in a program approved by the Department of Workforce Development and Advancement. Completion exempts you from the journeyman exam outright, and an out-of-state apprenticeship counts with proof that its sponsor was registered in that state.
La situación local
No local worker licenses since 1995 — tradesman licensing is uniform and statewide, and the statewide building code supersedes local codes. The one legacy path: anyone licensed by a Virginia locality before mid-1978 can exchange that card for the state license once, exam-free. Localities keep permits, inspections, and business taxes on contractors.
Si quieres trabajar por cuenta propia
Tradesman licenses are issued to individuals; contractor licenses to the business — and the line is printed on the application: any work contracted directly over $1,000 needs a Virginia contractor license. A W-2 traveler on a licensed contractor's payroll needs only the tradesman card; a self-employed plumber contracting past $1,000 needs both.
