Con licencia del estado
En Utah, esta actividad está sujeta a licencia. You need your own Utah license before you work here — or one from a state Utah accepts.

No exam - DOPL says so expressly. The division lists exactly one substantive requirement: your employer completes and signs the Verification of Supervision form, so in practice the employer starts it. From the fourth year of training you may work unsupervised up to eight hours in any 24. The fee is not published on the pages we verified - ask DOPL.
Cómo traer tu licencia de otro estado
Utah runs licensure by endorsement, and the statute is mandatory: a license with a similar scope, practiced under for at least one year, in good standing, and the division shall issue. For journeyman applicants from the jurisdictions on DOPL's equivalency map, that means paperwork only — no Utah exam — with an official verification sent from your home board.
Two cautions: the maps are dated 2020 and are guidance (the statute is the law, and the one-year practice requirement is the most common disqualifier), and a gray state on the map is not a dead end — city and county licenses and documented hours can build an evidence-heavy file instead. Masters carry one extra step that endorsement does not waive: the Utah Master Plumber Law and Rule exam, passed before you apply.
¿Puedes trabajar mientras está en trámite?
No — the license must issue before the work starts, and the exemption statutes contain no pending-application allowance. The practical bridge is the apprentice license: no exam, and exactly one substantive requirement — your employer signs the Verification of Supervision form. From the fourth year of training an apprentice may work without supervision up to eight hours in any 24.
Whether DOPL will issue one to an out-of-state journeyman as a stopgap is not established division practice, so ask before planning on it. Genuine exemptions worth screening for: a military spouse stationed in Utah with a good-standing out-of-state license practices without Utah licensure at all, and in-house maintenance for the property's owner needs no trade license.
El examen y el horario
The journeyman path is four years as a licensed apprentice under an approved training program, or eight years of division-approved experience; residential journeyman takes three and six; master takes two years as a licensed journeyman plus two supervisory, or a related associate degree plus one. One honest flag: DOPL's own pages disagree on the hour counts behind those years, so confirm your numbers with the division rather than quoting a website.
Exams run through Prov, and DOPL says apply only after your exams are passed.
Cómo funciona el programa de aprendizaje aquí
The apprentice plumber license is a real DOPL license with no exam and, on the division's own page, one requirement: the employer-completed and signed Verification of Supervision form — so in practice your employer initiates it. Identify your proposed supervisor on the application and file online.
La situación local
Utah settles this by statute: the DOPL license plus the business license at the company's home base are the only licenses required, and no city or county may demand anything more to qualify you to work in its jurisdiction. There is no local plumber card anywhere in Utah — permits and inspections are the employer's business as usual.
Si quieres trabajar por cuenta propia
Utah licenses the worker and the contractor separately, and stacks them: a plumbing contractor must already be a licensed master plumber, then add financial-responsibility evidence, a 25-hour prelicensure course, and a business-and-law course. A worker hired by a licensed plumbing contractor still needs their own individual license — the contractor credential covers the business, never the hands.
